Parenting
Parents of autistic children are often praised for being strong, which is another way of saying they have had no room to fall apart. Love and grief can sit in the same hour. You can be proud of your child’s mind and still miss the easier supermarket trip you thought you would have. That is not betrayal. It is being a person.
Comparison is a quiet poison — other children’s birthday parties, other people’s ‘he’s just naughty.’ Exhaustion is not solved by another productivity tip. What helps is one adult space where you do not have to translate your child, and a few supports that reduce the daily friction: sleep, school that understands, a plan for meltdowns that is not improvised at 7 p.m.
If you only ever talk about the child, you will disappear. Parent counselling is not self-indulgence. It is how you stay available. Come when you notice you are snapping, going numb, or feeling guilty for wanting an ordinary evening. We can hold the child’s needs and yours in the same room.
