Children
Parents often arrive with a mix of Google tabs and guilt. They have been told to wait, or they have been told to hurry. Autism does not look one way. Some children speak in paragraphs and still miss the social weather in a room. Some need sameness to feel safe. Some cover their ears in the market and are fine at home. The question is not “is my child typical?” The question is: is daily life getting harder than it needs to be?
Early signs are clues, not a diagnosis: delayed or unusual speech, limited back-and-forth, intense interests, distress at small changes, or strong sensory reactions. Any one of these can have other explanations. That is why a careful assessment looks at development over time, at school and at home, not at a ten-minute impression.
What helps in the meantime is often unglamorous: fewer simultaneous instructions, warning before transitions, protecting sleep, and one adult who is not rushing the child to “act normal.” If you are circling the same worries for months, an autism and developmental assessment can replace guessing with a plan. You do not need to be sure before you ask.
