I hear this worry in almost every parent session: “If I am too soft, I will spoil them.” Love does not spoil. What spoils a child’s sense of the world is unpredictability — yes after no, a treat to stop the crying, a rule that depends on the adult’s mood. The child is not becoming “bad.” They are doing science: which version of you will show up tonight?
Warmth plus structure is not a slogan. It looks like: I understand you want another episode. It is still time to stop. Then you sit through the protest without adding a speech. The protest is information, not a referendum.
If you swing between guilt-yes and explosion-no, you are not a failed parent. You are overloaded. Parent counselling is useful when the ‘no’ only comes out as a shout, or never comes at all. We practise one limit you can keep when you are tired. That is enough to start.
