What Is an ADHD Assessment?
An ADHD assessment looks carefully at attention, hyperactivity and impulsivity across time and settings — not only one bad term. It typically includes a detailed history, standardised questionnaires, clinical interview, and input from parents or teachers when the person is a child or adolescent. Adults may also be assessed when lifelong patterns have been missed or masked by hard work.
It is not the same as a five-minute internet quiz. Those tools can prompt curiosity; they do not produce a clinical report. A psychologist-led process weighs alternative explanations — sleep, anxiety, learning difficulties, mood — so ADHD is neither missed nor assumed.
You receive findings in plain language and a written report where appropriate, plus recommendations for home, school or work. Medication decisions, when relevant, involve medical colleagues; assessment itself is about clarity. If focus problems are the main worry for a child, start with the ADHD assessment page or a parent conversation about what you are seeing.
