Children
I rarely meet a child who ‘hates reading.’ I meet children who have been shamed about speed, or bored by books chosen for them, or asked to perform reading when they are already tired. Habit grows from pleasure plus repetition. Ten ordinary minutes, most days, beats a heroic weekend of chapters.
Read aloud longer than you think you should. Let them pick the same silly book again. Keep books where they can be grabbed. And let them see you read something that is not a phone. Children copy status. If reading looks like a chore you outsourced to them, they will treat it as homework.
When a child fights every page, guess slowly: is it the eyes, the sounds, the sitting still, or the feeling of being behind? A learning assessment is useful when the gap between talking and reading is large, or when avoidance has lasted months. We can like books and still need help with the mechanics.
